Day 28: Wassail
Be Well
When I was young, my mom would make wassail all December long, and the whole house would smell like orange and spices. The recipe belonged to a family friend, which made it all the more special. It is made with a combination of apple cider, orange juice, and various spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. Some recipes also call for the addition of alcohol like wine or brandy, but it can easily be made without it.
Wassail translates roughly as “Be Well,” so it is a great reminder to check in with yourself today--physically, socially, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually.
The warm, comforting aroma of wassail can bring back fond memories and create a cozy atmosphere during the colder months of the year. It’s a great way to spread holiday cheer and share a delicious drink with loved ones.
So, take a moment to make yourself a cup of wassail and check in with yourself.
Are you taking care of your body and getting enough rest?
Are you connecting with friends and family?
Emotionally, are you practicing self-care and coping with stress in a healthy way?
Mentally, are you challenging yourself and learning new things?
Spiritually, are you connecting with your beliefs and values? Are you feeling connected with ancestors? If you believe in a higher power, are you setting aside time to feel their presence?
The answers to these questions can help you know where to place your focus for the new year. Remember to take care of yourself this holiday season and enjoy a delicious cup of wassail. Be well!
